Is Stress Affecting Your Period?

We get it, you’re a busy boss lady. Whether you’re acing your homework, or absolutely crushing work on your way to a promotion, we want you to feel your best.

Stress has been known to affect menstrual cycles. We all know stress can overwhelm us, tire us out, and just in general not be fun. Stress causes your body to produce increased levels of cortisol, which ultimately affects your immune system and overall health. At aura, we want you to manage your PMS - not increase them. Not only is your physical health important, but your mental health is too.

We know sleep, diet, exercise and mental strength all need to be balanced to avoid increased levels of stress - but what does that mean? What can we do when duty calls at work or Midterms are coming up?

Making time is key. Putting yourself first is something that women often ignore because we do so much for other people. To be the best versions of ourselves, we’ve got to feel healthy & happy. When your PMS is out of whack or your period is getting missed or sporadic due to stress - that’s your sign to take a breath and reflect how YOU are doing. Here are a few checklist items aura likes to use to check in on ourselves:

  • Are you sleeping? No? Cut the TV right before bed. Studies show that TV stimulates your brain and can decrease your melatonin levels right before bedtime.

  • Eating junk food to get through the day? Understandable, sometimes a quick bag of Doritos can power you through that last hour of work, but it also leaves you feeling not great and crashing 30 minutes later. Swap out for Almonds that have protein to keep you going and may even help with PMS.

  • Dehydrated? We get it, you’re busy running the world! Water can keep you feeling refreshed and help your body reduce bloating when you’re PMS-ing. Keeping a large water bottle with you at all times can help you remember to drink water throughout the day.

  • Exercise. This can be either the best time of your day or the time you most dread. Instead of pushing yourself to do cardio that you absolutely despise or bend in crazy positions with Yoga that you just have never quite loved, choose an exercise routine that works best for you. Like period health, there is no one-size-fits-all, so taking a fun Zumba dance class might seem more attractive than running 8 miles that might be enjoyable for someone else. Doing a beginner yoga class when it’s day 2 of your period and you feel like crying might help you get back into a peaceful head space that reminds you to be present while not having to pull a back muscle doing Handstand Scorpion.

  • Mentally stressed? Do something for YOURSELF. Take a walk with headphones and lose yourself in Tame Impala. Do a breathing exercise for 15 minutes in between assignments to reset yourself. You deserve a moment to yourself to see how you’re doing.
